Terry is one of the many young people who have had a tremendous impact on our school and the Calvert county community. His development into a high, quality young man while persevering through many trials and tribulations has become a true inspiration.Last Spring at the Southern Maryland Fellowship of Christian Athlete banquet Terry Jones shared a heart-felt and sincere story about his life journey.
Here is what Terry had to say:
“Throughout my life I have been faced with adversity that would hinder the average teen in today’s society. I have faced some trials that would break the average African American male in this society as well, but here I stand today, living proof that through God all is possible. Growing up in the streets of Washington D.C., in a house-hold with a single mother was very tough. On top of that not having a steady income, made just getting by tough at times. All of these problems throughout my everyday life would lead you to think that I would fold or break under pressure, but no, not me. During middle school I was constantly faced with the probability of failing at each grade. During that time my good soul provided good intentions but my troubled mind offered bad decisions and I found myself in avoidable trouble. I was feeling as if I was on the edge and I had nothing left, so I started to seek a sign from God, any sign. In the mist of I facing obstacles that I didn’t, and still to this day don’t, understand.
It was a couple of years ago when my mom was fired from her job during her pregnancy with my much younger sister. At that time it was just mom, my sister and me. I started thinking that I would have to grow up and take care of my own. But that was not in God’s plan because there was no way I could do that on my own. I was finally at the point where I was questioning everything and I was looking totally towards God with everything I had. I began my intentional journey with God. My new found trust and faith was challenging but through Coach Sneade, my football family and FCA I started to trust that God’s power and wisdom was greater than all things.
I began to see that God allows you to go through challenges and hard times to help mold your spirit and strengthen your faith. God has blessed me with my Calvert football family that is full of God fearing believers that have shared in similar journeys. Their lives are an inspiration. It is through the Calvert football program that I have personally realized how we can use the great game of football to impact and change lives. I have learned to work with others. I have grown in my discipline. I have improved in so many facets of my life, but none of that compares to how I have learned to love others, myself and God. In the end God has a plan for every single one of us, we need to take his hand, trust in him, and he will guide you the right way.”
As of the fall of 2014 Terry continues to excel. During the summer Terry academically earned his way onto the Morgan State campus and is now an official college student. While he embraces the entire college experience through numerous clubs and organizations, he continues to work extremely hard and is constantly checking in on the Calvert Football program and the Calvert Community.
