Playoff Game #1 Bleacher Report, Here we Go!

Let’s Go Calvert!

Calvert 28 McDonough 0

The Calvert Cavaliers held the visiting McDonough Rams (Pomfret) to less than 10 first downs on their way to a 28-0 victory in Friday’s first round of the playoff matchup.

The defense created five turnovers and had five sacks, none bigger than Junior Anthony Stevenson’s (66) on the first drive of the second half. The defensive lineman ran down the quarterback from behind to trip him to stop their drive in their tracks.

“Incredible effort play,” said Head Coach Rick Sneade. “When you have a big guy like that running down the line and making a play like that, that is big time.”

Seniors Arron McCready (45), Cody Daniels (21), Deangelo Wallace (3), along with Sophomore Damon Mansfield (33), all had fumble recoveries.

On offense, Calvert had a balanced hard-working approach.  The Cavaliers had rushing touchdowns by Erron Touch (7), Domaine Wallace (25) and Quarterback Stevie Oursler (9).  Stevie also rolled to his right and threw a beautiful pass in the back in the end zone to Wide Receiver Carter Gosheff (11) for a score.  The drive was set up by Carter’s long punt return.

Offensive lineman Cornell Johnson (75) and Damon Mansfield (33) created a huge hole on Damaine’s touchdown and Stevie followed the block of Cortez Johnson (77) to score from the one-yard line to put the game away at 28-0.

Sophomore kicker Lee Veltz (30) was four for four on extra point attempts.

“In the first half we were in the red zone five times but only scored once,” said Coach Sneade. “We have to finish. We can’t commit errors that get us off schedule. This was an emphasis and focus this week at practice.”

Coach Sneade praised the defense for stepping up as the offense worked through their first half struggles.

“The defense was great all night,” he said. “They delivered and we were able to take advantage of turnovers they created to get points. In the second half, the offense woke up and played a much cleaner game.  For tonight’s game, it is imperative we get our running game going.”

Stevie Oursler was 18-27 for 189 yards and Erron Touch lead the rushing attack with 85 yards. Carter Gosheff had 7 catches for 59 yards, Cody Daniels had 2 catches for 61 yards and Junior Jason Kinney (4) and Sophomore Jalen Barnes (1) each had four catches each.

The Cavaliers will face Gwynn Park (Brandywine) tonight at 7 p.m. at THE CALVERT HIGH.  The Yellowjackets advanced in the playoffs after defeating Crossland 21-0 last Friday.

“Gwynn Park is a very talented football team,” Coach Sneade acknowledged. “They have a lot of athletes; we can’t allow them to have many explosive plays.”

Admission for tonight’s game will be $6. Tickets to the game can be purchased online only at:
