Playoff Game #2 Bleacher Report, Go Calvert!

Friday, November 11, 2021, Gwynn Park 28 Calvert 0

The Calvert High School Varsity football season came to a sudden halt Friday night when the visiting Gwynn Park Yellowjackets beat the Cavaliers 28-0 in a MPSSAA Football Class 2A/1A South Region playoff matchup.

In front of a large and vocal home crowd, the Yellowjackets and Cavaliers traded possessions in the first half with both defenses clamping down at the right times.  However, the Yellowjackets led at halftime 6-0.

“We had some opportunities that we could not capitalize on,” Head Coach Rick Sneade said.  “They are a very good football team, and we knew we were not going to get many chances.”

The emphasis in practice last week was limiting the number of explosive plays, according to Coach Sneade.  Unfortunately for the home team, the Yellowjackets had two big explosive plays that changed the tide and momentum of the game in the third quarter.

“Uncommon greatness will not be defined on what the scoreboard shows,” Coach Sneade told the team after the game. “We are here to make you the best Cavalier and best people you can be. Believe that.”

The Cavaliers finished the regular season with a 5-4 record: however, a 5-1 record in their division. They were able to host two playoff games for the first time in several years and 1-1 in the post season.

The future is bright for the Calvert High School Football program.

“We are only losing eight seniors, many in key positions though,” Coach Sneade said. “We had 12 sophomores contribute this year … who fought hard all season and got better with each game.  We will be returning 61 players (to the entire program) and if we get 20 to 25 incoming freshmen to join us, we will have 80 in the program which will allow us to fully fill a Blue and Gold squad.”

After a week off, the offseason football program will begin in the weight room three days a week after school.

“These student-athletes that are part of the football program are family,” Coach Sneade said. “You don’t take breaks off from family, so we can’t take breaks from these guys. We will approach the weight room and ease into things and make it worth their while, and obviously we will grind.”

After the game, Coach Sneade addressed the 2021 team for the final time. He praised the eight senior players, (Deangelo Wallace (3), Collin Short (10), Easton Schaible (12), Cody Daniels (21), Aaron Mccready (45), Kyle Wilcox (54), Koby Valentin (56), Ej Kareem (57) and the two senior managers, Justin Galvin and Zachary Kimmel) and expressed his gratitude for their care of the football program legacy.

“We now get to be your mentors who will continue to guide and be there for you for the rest of your life,” Coach Sneade said.  “We will be at your weddings; we will receive the phone call when you have children and other significant life events.”

Coach Sneade paused and told the seniors, “I’m proud of you and I appreciate each of you … I love you guys.”

Before taking a team photo, Senior Aaron McCready gathered the team together one last time and implored them to be loud as they did their end of practice/game chant.

“Calvert on three,” Aaron yelled … the team responded loudly which could be heard all the way in the parking lot …

Honorary Cavalier on the sideline

Long-time Calvert Football manager Jason Gaines was on the sideline for the game. Jason recently rang the bell signaling he was cancer free.

After the game, Coach Sneade presented Jason with a Calvert football helmet. The helmet was plastered with swords, each sword representing a cancer treatment Jason had endured.

“All your hard work and your fight to beat out a nasty disease like cancer, has been more than an inspiration to all of us… Jason we love you,” Coach Sneade said. “Once a Cavalier always a Cavalier.”
